Update Your Practice With the 2021 Sepsis Guidelines

Webinar Summary

As a continuing worldwide health challenge, sepsis remains a priority focus for bedside clinicians and medical science. High sepsis mortality rates persist, particularly for patients with organ dysfunction. In this webinar, clinical nurse specialist and sepsis expert Maureen Seckel will review the newest updates to the “International Guidelines for Management of Sepsis and Septic Shock” and help you translate them for your nursing practice. Published by the Surviving Sepsis Campaign — a partnership between the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the Society of Critical Care Medicine — these guidelines are widely recognized as best practice in caring for patients diagnosed with sepsis and septic shock. Seckel, who contributed to the updated guidelines on behalf of AACN, will discuss how the changes build on prior knowledge, integrating additional science on the pathology of sepsis with evidence-based interventions. Release of the Guidelines is expected in fall of 2021.

Maureen A Seckel, MSN, APRN, ACNS-BC, CCRN, CCNS, FCCM, FCNS, FAAN

National sepsis expert Maureen Seckel is a critical care clinical nurse specialist and sepsis coordinator at Christiana Care in Newark, Delaware. She has been a member of the facility’s Ernest Amory Codman Award-winning Sepsis Value Improvement Team since 2004. Seckel is widely published and has presented on multiple critical care topics, including sepsis. She served as the AACN liaison to and an author of both the 2016 and 2021 updates to the Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines. She was also a member of the 2013-2015 Society of Critical Care Medicine collaborative “Surviving Sepsis on the Wards” and served on AACN’s board of directors (2010-2013).
